Here at Apple Orchard we are very proud of our homemade cider. Made from the apples picked here in our orchard. In September, October and November we use both traditional and more modern methods to collect the apples.
Traditional methods involve using a panking pole (a long pole with a hook on the end) to reach high into the tree to shakes the apples off the branches. the apples are then picked up by hand and collected into many buckets ready for scratting.
The modern method uses the apple picking up machine, a little like a hand pushed lawn mower, which picks up the apples storing them in a tray at the back of the machine. This machine saves a lot of back aching!
The apples then go through the scratter which turns the whole apples into pulp ready for pressing. We use a hydraulic cider press and when it’s collected enough juice, we send it away to a local company for bottling. When it is returned to us, the only thing left to do is to put some in the fridge. It’s then ready for lucky customers to buy!
